How to Answer Interview Questions

Avoid negatives and negative connotations. Try to answer all your questions with positive words. Ban the use of "no" and "not" in any conversation you have while interviewing or networking. For example, instead of saying "I haven't had any experience with international flying", say "I look forward to my first opportunity to fly overseas" or instead of calling baggage handlers or airplane cleaners "grunts", refer to them as "ground service personnel". In the first case you turn a negative into a positive, enthusiastic statement. In the latter, you show respect for even the lowest wage earners in your industry.

Standard Interview Questions

  • Describe your specific responsibilities in your current job.
  • Have you ever taken yourself off the flying schedule?
  • How many hours per month do you devote to duties other than flying?
  • I see you frequently change employers. How will we know you will stay with us?
  • I see you had a break between jobs. Why?
  • I see you have had many jobs in this industry. Why?
  • I see you have only worked for one employer, but for a very long time. Why did you stay with them so long?

Appearance, Grooming and the Handshake

You want to make the best first impression ... so why not look and act like the airline pilot you are trying to be? Your dress, attitude and behavior must be evidence of your professionalism and your readiness to do the job. Why do we keep saying "conservative"? It is because airlines are by nature conservative organizations. Airlines want to hire conservative, professional people who are willing to take responsibility and have a mature attitude. Your choice of dress for an interview - and ANY meeting with company officials - says as much about you as your resume, your speech patterns and your posture. So do your grooming, handshake and general attitude.

Science Review

Tropopause - Boundary between the troposphere and the stratosphere. Acts as a "lid" on weather. Only powerful thunderstorms or hurricanes can push through the tropopause.
Stratosphere - Layer of the atmosphere that extends from the tropopause to about 185,000' or 50km. Region of increasing temperature with altitude and the location of the ozone layer.
Stratopause - Boundary between the stratosphere and the mesosphere. The warm layer around the stratopause is due to the absorption of solar ultraviolet radiation by the ozone layer.

Syllogisms and Logic

A syllogistic statement can be further dissected into subject - copula - predicate. The "Subject" is the noun or condition being discussed. The "Copula" is the linking verb and the "Predicate" is further information about the subject - what the subject is doing or what the subject is like or what the subject belongs to. The subject and predicate are further generalized as "terms". A common copula in syllogisms is the verb "to be". Thus Aristotle's simple syllogism is broken down as:

All men are mortal --> "men" is the subject, "are" is the copula and "mortal" is the predicate.

Resume Mistakes

22. Pictures, graphics or URL links that no recruiter will call up. Do not include a picture of yourself on a résumé. Companies do not want to know the age, gender or race of applicants as they fear discrimination suits. Graphics watermarked in the background may obscure text and ruin copies that may need to be made. If a reader needs to click on a URL to get information about you or a previous employer, they will consider this too much trouble and you run the risk of having your resume discarded.

Flash Cards

Dihedral - Positive wing angle to the horizontal gives inherent stability in roll. As the aircraft rolls, the lower wing has more lift than the upper, rolling the aircraft back into the level position.

Precession - Wobbling of Earth on its axis resulting in a slow change of the celestial North Pole

Laser - Single wavelength high energy photons traveling in a tight path

FedEx

Starting pay is $2000 a month, and you will collect that starting on day one until you finish IOE. After you finish IOE, your pay will go to $49.86 per hour. You can expect to receive somewhere around 1000 credit hours per year, so your first year's pay after IOE is almost $50,000. First year pay is the same no matter which seat you occupy. Seat progression is a result of many factors including expansion and aircraft acquisition, retirements and personal choice. Currently FedEx is very profitable, expanding its route structure and acquiring aircraft.

If you move to the right seat of the B727 during your second year, you will receive $96.12 per hour.
